Dental Extraction

Mint Smile Studio

Nobody looks forward to having a tooth removed, but dental extractions are often a needed procedure. Often, teeth are badly broken down due to large cavities or being fractured after biting on something hard. These broken teeth can start to affect neighboring teeth or lead to pain, difficulty chewing or swelling. Other times, teeth need to be extracted due to not having enough space in their mouths, such as wisdom teeth or teeth that need to be removed before getting braces. Many people come in with pain that affects their everyday lives, due to the discomfort they feel from the tooth.

When it’s not possible to save these teeth due to cavities, fractures, infection or enough space, it’s important to have this procedure completed by a skilled and caring doctor. Dr. Vishal Advani in Elmhurst, IL is very experienced in oral surgery and all tooth extractions. Even the more complicated extractions, such as impacted wisdom teeth, can be removed at our office due to the advanced training Dr. Advani has.

One of the things many patients tell us after their tooth extraction with Dr. Advani is that the procedure was quick and painless. Dr. Advani utilizes a safe and precise approach to all surgical procedures, which eliminates pain during the procedure and allows for quick healing and recovery.

Extracting Wisdom Teeth and Impacted Teeth

Many people start getting their wisdom teeth between the ages of 15-20, which is the best time to remove wisdom teeth. It’s common for most wisdom teeth to come in incorrectly or not have enough space in the mouth and the wisdom teeth start to put pressure on other teeth. When there’s not enough space for these teeth, they become stuck or “impacted” under the gums and bone. The pressure from these impacted teeth can lead to pain or swelling and bacteria can get underneath the gum and lead to infections on the wisdom teeth. For all these reasons, it’s very important to remove the wisdom teeth early.

Many people get nervous when they find out they need their wisdom teeth removed. The procedure itself is very straightforward. Dr. Vishal Advani will explain the procedure in full ahead of time, so you know exactly what to expect. Dr. Advani will make sure you are fully numbed and relaxed before starting the procedure. Typically, all 4 wisdom teeth are removed at one time, so healing can occur all at once and patients don’t have to go through the procedure more than once. Dr. Advani’s advanced training and skill in Oral Surgery and Wisdom Tooth removal allows this procedure to be smooth and painless.

Post-op Care and Recovery after your Tooth Extraction

Dr. Advani will review the procedure and how to take care of the area. If you will have sedation or have medication prescribed to help relax you for the visit, you will plan to bring a friend or family member with you to our office. This person will stay at the office during the procedure and then will drive you home.

You will be numb for 2-4 hours after the procedure and won’t have much discomfort during this time. You will be asked to apply an ice pack to the outer cheek to reduce swelling. Dr. Advani will prescribe medication to reduce discomfort and an antibiotic to prevent an infection. You will eat a soft diet, such as yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal, bananas, mashed potatoes and other soft food that don’t require much chewing for the first 3-7 days. Typically, patients are able to return to school or work the next day or 2 days later. During this time, we recommend resting, without exerting yourself, so the extraction sites heal quickly.
